Primary Function

The Controls Engineering Manager will be responsible for the development and execution of the overall controls strategy at the Ashland City plant and will assist with other locations’ strategies. You'll manage while providing guidance, technical leadership, training, and formal performance management to (8) Controls Engineering Technologists to empower them to support production throughput, efficiency, first pass yield, cost reduction, and safety improvements.

Scope of Responsibility

  • Mentor and develop the Controls Engineering Technologists’ professional and technical skills while being their formal performance manager
  • Lead and execute large capital and small improvement controls projects, that support improvements to key plant metrics: safety, quality, on-time delivery, and efficiency
  • Support production by evaluating root causes and providing recommended countermeasures for controls related issues
  • Support maintenance when additional technical expertise is required
  • Act as a leader in developing and applying new technologies
  • Assist in leading a cross-functional manufacturing engineering department
  • Understand manufacturing processes, then define and establish controls solutions to meet production's needs
  • Support and develop the SCADA system used for monitoring production
  • Direct the work of the team by prioritizing and assigning work, developing goals and targets, and monitoring results. May modify, approve, seal or sign work done by CAD Operators, Designers or engineers under direct supervision. May approve Passport work orders.
  • Represent the department as the point of contact for and establish effective working relationships with internal and external customers and coordinate departmental activities with those customers
  • Support and actively participate in the development of direct reports through training, mentoring, and succession development. May recommend direct reports for promotion within the engineering hierarchy.
  • Conduct performance appraisals for employees under direct supervision. Assist department manager with hiring and disciplinary decisions. 
    Perform administrative duties, including approval of expense reports and IT requests


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field from a 4-year college or university, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of experience formally managing direct reports in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in a controls leadership role, focused on completing projects on time and within budget, while mentoring and developing others
  • Strong experience as a controls engineer, Allen-Bradley preferred but not required
  • Must demonstrate keen attention to detail
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to drive to the resolution of root cause
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, teach, and mentor technical and non-technical knowledge to hourly employees to drive business results
  • High level of integrity and professionalism
