APCOM is a component part manufacturing business unit of A.O. Smith that has produced parts such as thermostats, heating elements, dip-tubes and drain valves for over 50 years. APCOM facilities produce more than 100 million components each year, with new applications for our products added regularly. We are currently seeking an experienced Sr. Project Engineer to work hands-on designing the latest generation of our many products.


  • Design components to solve customer problems such as efficiency requirements and manufacturing bottlenecks.
  • Manage new product development, product improvement and cost savings projects from start to finish while meeting target schedules and staying within budget.
  • Conduct project meetings, document action items and prepare reports to communicate the status of the project within the team and to management.
  • Create concepts and prototypes of new products for team evaluation and testing.
  • Specify and coordinate verification, validation and reliability testing.
  • Work with product certification agencies such as UL and CSA to achieve and maintain certification.
  • Work with Quality and Manufacturing Engineering to specify ongoing manufacturing test requirements.
  • Engage with manufacturing plant floor team to fully understand processes and assist when questions or concerns arise.
  • Investigate non-conforming materials and author dispositions based on technical and business expertise.
  • Utilize lean tools such as A3 and 8 Step Problem Solving to determine root-cause and a resolution path for product or manufacturing issues.
  • Evaluate new suppliers and raw materials for use in our operations.
  • Communicate and visit with customers to answer questions, review projects, discuss new applications and gain a deep understanding of what they value.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with 5 - 10 years of engineering experience.
  • Experience in at least some of the following areas: Design of relays or electrical switchgear, plumbing components, pressurized components, stampings, and/or injection molded parts. Cost analysis of small components. Automation friendly part design. DFMEA and failure analysis.
  • Experience with SolidWorks or any other 3-D CAD design software is a plus. 
  • Proficient in Excel, PowerPoint and ERP systems such as SAP.
