Primary Function

Located between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Smoky Mountains to the west, our Johnson City, Tennessee manufacturing facility has nearly 1000 employees and manufactures well over a million residential water heaters on an annual basis.  We are looking for a Welding Engineer that will be responsible for the development and execution of the overall welding strategy. The Welding Engineer will provide guidance and training to plant welders to support and improve production towards meeting plant goals.

Role Specific Responsibilities

  • Develop Welding techniques and procedures, apply welding processes and equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing the knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys and Engineering Principles
  • Conduct Research and Development for new fabrication processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques and procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance to help support production throughput, efficiency, first pass yield, cost reduction, scrap/rework reduction and safety improvements.
  • Establish training guidelines and content; educate supervisors, operators and support personnel in  process flow, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting activities.
  • Provide technical support and project management for new equipment purchases by involvement in specifications, quoting, design review process, review of welding documentation and establishment of strong relationships with vendors
  • Apply structured problem solving approach to complex processes and equipment issues with the ability to determine root cause, as well as implement timely corrective action.
  • Prepare technical reports as result of research and development and preventative maintenance investigations.
  • Support new equipment and process installation, start up, debug, optimization and training.
  • Develop processes and systems for new equipment and welding applications
  • Coordinate jobs/projects with outside vendors/ contractors.
  • Develop and maintain reactionary plans for process troubleshooting.
  • Comply with all Safety and Quality Policies and Procedures
  • Prepare and qualify Welding Procedure Specifications
  • Participate in company-wide Welding Council activities
  • Provide Welding Engineering Support to other sites as needed

Qualifications - Experience

  • 5+ years experience with fabrication and welding in a fast-paced manufacturing environment required.
  • GMAW, GTAW, Resistance Welding and Projection Resistance welding experience required.
  • Experience with robotic welding and programming required.
  • Prior experience with weld metallographic evaluation and failure analysis methods required
  • Experience with mash resistance seam welding preferred.
  • Prior experience in supervising production, training and testing equipment preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as product design drawings, operating and maintenance instructions, procedural manuals and equipment drawings and schematics.
  • Computer skills (MS Office) and CAD skills (AutoCAD, Solidworks, or similar)

Qualifications - Other

  • Bachelor's Degree in Welding Engineer, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field preferred
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Communicate frequently with internal and external stakeholders regarding issues
  • Fosters an environment conducive to high employee engagement
  • Must possess strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently as a team to meet deadlines and goals.
