Primary Function

Responsible for evaluating gas and electric product designs to corresponding agency, governmental and company standards in support of new product development, product maintenance and cost reduction.  Test developmental or current production products and their integral components with minimum guidance.  Conduct evaluation of competitive product as required.  

Responsibilities

  1. Must demonstrate general knowledge of the theory of operation of all types of water heating equipment.
  2. Evaluate new product designs for compliance to ANSI Z21.10.1 & .3 and UL 174 as well as Department of Energy Efficiency Regulations and SCAQMD Nox Protocols.
  3. Assist Product Engineers and Lab Technicians in the resolution of design or testing related issues as required to obtain agency compliance. 
  4. Assist in provide training on start up, use and preventative maintenance for lab technicians on all applicable systems.
  5. Assist in the preparation of Test Plans for Product Development and Certification.
  6. Prepare AGA Test Submittal Packages for review by AGA in preparation for product certification.
  7. Prepare written test reports and/or data for submission to management and/or certifying agency.  Supply analysis of reports and data to management and/or certifying agency. 
  8. Set up test units or their integral components for testing.  Interface test units with test device and/or data collection unit. 
  9. Design, build and set up standard mechanical or electrical testing devices and apparatus such as temperature recorders/indicators, combustion analyzers, gas meters, anemometers, etc.  This will include development and programming of data acquisition systems, programming computers for data retrieval and programming of computers for data analysis.
  10. Prepare units and test stations for all test programs.  Transmit/receive information from outside agency inspector during agency approval testing.  Maintain a professional relationship with approval agency inspectors.
  11. Request, coordinate, and perform model shop activities as required.  This includes sketches of work to be performed.
  12. Maintain accreditation with IAS and A.O. Smith as a certified tech. 
  13. Design tests, test equipment, fixtures and data acquisition equipment as required.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred. 
  • Experience in laboratory testing of A.O. Smith product is required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ANSI and UL standards related to gas and electric water heaters or similar appliances.
  • Must have or acquire Accredited Technician status with AGA to perform and submit testing results for ANSI Z21.10.1 and Z21.10.3 standards.  
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and various software application skills

Education

Associate Degree in Related Field

Years of Experience

Minimum of 3 years of related work experience or training
