A. O. Smith’s Commercial Product Engineering team develops Commercial Water Heaters and Boilers, a category where we are the industry leader with over 50% market share.  As part of our greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal of 10% by 2025, 17 of 18 of our North America Water Heating Division product development projects “in development” or “pending resources” are either zero carbon or high-efficiency (condensing) gas products, which typically support a 50% improvement in energy efficiency.


We are looking for a Mechanical Project Engineer – Sustaining that will be located at our Commercial Water Heater and Boiler Engineering/Manufacturing location in McBee, SC.   This role will spend the first year working with Engineering/Manufacturing on a variety of projects focused on current product (cost reduction, ect.) and will then spend the second year providing technical and analytical support to Customers, Sales, Marketing, Customer and Technical Service.   


This role is eligible to participate in our remote work program, which allows employees to work remotely up to two days per week.  New employees in eligible roles can apply for this program after successfully completing their initial 90 days of employment. This role is also eligible for relocation assistance.


  • Participate in industry groups
  • Perform advanced engineering tasks under limited supervision
  • Assist with mentoring the engineering design team in development projects throughout the entire cycle from initial concept through successful completion
  • Collaborate with others on writing patents, papers, or trade secrets
  • Oversee all aspects of a significant engineering project from start to finish so that it is completed on time and within budget
  • Develop action plans and estimate requirements for resources including management, labor, materials, and time required to complete each project
  • Prepare monthly reports detailing progress and costs for top management
  • Develop and apply engineering standards and procedures and provide advice on issues within the engineering field
  • Analyze and identify causes of component failures
  • Provide technical solutions to help solve manufacturing issues or address customer field issues
  • Lead the design group during the conceptual phase of product development
  • Conduct project meetings and prepare reports to communicate the status of the project within and beyond the team
  • Complete assigned engineering projects in accordance with customer specifications and within schedule and budget limitations
  • Coordinate activities of engineering team, contractors, and vendors as necessary
  • Lead brainstorming activities to meet specific Company needs


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field plus 3 years of experience or Master’s degree in related field
  • Demonstrate in depth knowledge in related field (heat transfer, combustion)
  • Experience with CAE tools such as Solidworks, MATLAB, LabView, Minitab, EES, CFD or FEA
  • Excellent analytical skills for reviewing solving complex problems
  • Great communication and organizational skills
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills in order to balance multiple projects within a defined schedule and budget
  • 6 Sigma or FMEA experience preferred
