A.O. The mission of the Corporate Technology Center (CTC) is to conduct research and development in support of our global business operations to help bring new products and processes to market, as well as to improve upon our existing products and processes. A.O. Smith as an organization has a strong history of dedication to student mentorship and development. Every year, CTC hires and/or partners with programs that have hired and assigned to A. O. Smith more than a dozen co-op students and interns, allowing them the opportunity to gain exposure to R&D in fields such as material science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, biology and chemistry in an industrial setting. This Co-operative position will be located in Milwaukee, WI.
Primary Function
This position will provide hands-on industrial experience within a research and development organization and is structured to complement the student’s prior academic exposure to various engineering disciplines while developing new skill sets. The primary goal of the co-op program is to adequately prepare students for professional careers in engineering and is designed to fit within the alternating school & work semester schedules established by many engineering colleges. The current position is seeking a co-op student to work at the interface of chemistry, materials science and engineering to assist senior engineering staff in the evaluation and development of sensing technologies focused on but not limited to chemical, biochemical, electronic and optical sensors.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the research and development of water and gas sensors.
- Assist senior engineers in the preparation of chemical solutions and gas mixtures in support of sensor projects.
- Run experiments involving the evaluation of various sensor technologies
- Analyze large data sets and apply statistical methods
- Prepare presentations and reports
- Produce CAD drawings
- Utilize programming languages, such as Python and R to analyze data and implement various sensor algorithms
Role Specific Responsibilities
Qualifications
- Enrolled as an undergraduate student in an Engineering program from an accredited university.
- Preferred disciplines: Environmental engineering, bioengineering, biochemical, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering
- Completed at least one year of college coursework and have a minimum of a Sophomore status.
- Availability to co-op for at least 3 terms.
- A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in major related coursework.
- Conscientious & dependable, with the ability to work on small teams as well as independently.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Proficiency with personal computers and MS Office Products (Word, Excel, etc).
- Some experience with one or more programming languages and CAD software is desirable.
