The Corporate Technology Center (CTC) is the innovative nucleus of the organization. The CTC is charged with discovering, innovating, and developing the next big breakthroughs for A. O. Smith led by a collection of research engineers, material scientists, and experienced technicians. The brand-new research facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin consists of state-of-the-art laboratories, collaborative workspaces and a friendly environment to empower our team to push technology limits.

Primary Function

Research and develop advanced embedded control solutions to improve the energy efficiency, optimize the end-user’s experience, and ensure the safe operation of A. O. Smith water heater, heat pump, hydronic heat, and water treatment systems; contributions critical to sustaining A. O. Smith’s innovative edge in the marketplace. Ensures viable new control systems are commercialized by supporting new product development projects within the business units.


  • Work independently as well as with a diverse team to develop and apply advanced embedded control solutions to A. O. Smith products using modeling, optimization, estimation, and sensor technologies. 
  • Validate performance of control solutions through simulations, laboratory experimentation on A. O. Smith water heater, heat pump, hydronic heat, and water treatment systems, and data analysis.
  • Document technology and results through patent applications, technical reports, and publications
  • Work in a team environment with colleagues across all global A. O. Smith research centers and business units to bring advanced embedded control technologies to the marketplace. 
  • Stay current with advances in system technologies to seek out new ideas and applications. 


  • Master's degree in advanced controls, optimization, estimation or detection algorithms or BS degree in engineering plus 3 years relevant controls design work experience. 
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and C, C++, or Python
  • Demonstrated experience (algorithm development and software implementation) in developing systems solutions for complex physical systems (e.g., HVAC systems, mechanical systems, power systems, transportation, aviation systems). 
  • Experience with schematic and PCB layout tools, such as KiCad or Altium a plus.
  • Understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics a plus. 


Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Related Field
