Primary Function

 The Global Manufacturing Process Engineer is responsible for working with all A.O. Smith facilities and providing expert manufacturing engineering guidance & support to optimize facility footprint utilization and material process flows associated with manufacturing processes, providing support for capacity & labor productivity improvements, and creating plans for future growth (up to and including facility expansions and new green field opportunities) in a global organization.

 

 

Scope of Responsibility

The Global Manufacturing Process Engineer works with Global Director of Manufacturing Engineering, facility engineering, maintenance & production managers, and their respective teams in providing manufacturing engineering support for major projects associated with facility footprint utilization initiatives, capacity & labor productivity improvements and material process flows ensuring alignment between need, technology, and solution.  The Global Manufacturing Process Engineer will also provide process standardization and facilitation support for defined core manufacturing processes.

Role Specific Responsibilities

  • Facilitate Material Process Flow / Value Stream Mappings of existing manufacturing processes including identification of process related bottlenecks, capacity productivity, line balancing and material presentation improvement opportunities
  • Establish understanding of site manufacturing processes and facility footprint challenges, and work with facility manufacturing teams to analyze work force utilization, space requirement and workflow improvement opportunities
  • Develop capacity productivity plans and forward-looking facility layouts to optimize existing plant footprint utilization and material process flows
  • Investigate technologies for alignment and help to ensure that automation strategies are developed and implemented to help advance manufacturing capabilities
  • Provide manufacturing engineering support for suggested manufacturing / assembly process changes, and for capital projects affecting material process flow and equipment layout in a way that helps ensure that the proposed solution aligns need, technology, and application)
  • Provide manufacturing process engineering support for process standardization initiatives associated with core manufacturing processes to help achieve defined goals & objectives
  • Perform other activities as business needs require

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a related field from a 4-year college or university (industrial engineering & industrial technology preferred)
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience with manufacturing related processes
  • Broad understanding of manufacturing processes and work environments
  • Experience with Material Process Flow and/or Value Stream Mapping and Process Analysis
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and other Continuous Improvement Methodologies (A3 problem solving, capacity & labor productivity studies, line balancing, process simulation, material presentation, etc)

 

Additional Qualifications

  • Highly motivated, self-starter with strong understanding of manufacturing / assembly processes, capacity productivity assessments, line balancing, and material presentation concepts
  • Good project management skills with proven ability to influence without authority
  • Able to facilitate cross-functional, multi-site relationships that promote cooperation and consensus between global team members (process standardization)
  • Able to organize, plan, develop, and execute tactical and strategic manufacturing initiatives, and must carry out duties with utmost integrity
  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally (upwards of 30% as business needs dictate)
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proficient with computers and programs, specifically Excel, Word, PowerPoint, miniTab (data analytics), process simulation software (simul8), autoCAD, etc
  • Demonstrated problem solving experience using A3/Problem Solving Flow Chart (PSFC) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) tools with focus on continuous improvement (a plus)
  • Experience & knowledge of metal processing – cutting, forming, punching, rolling, press safety controls, etc (a plus)
