Protective Coatings Division of A. O. Smith is a major producer of frit used in glass linings for water heater tanks. In addition to manufacturing porcelain enamel coatings for water heaters, the facility, manufactures inorganic coatings for the appliance, automotive, and metallurgical markets that are corrosion and abrasion resistant.  Located in the Northern Kentucky Industrial Park just south of Cincinnati, the 80,000-square-foot building contains the offices of the division staff along with two development laboratories for the researching and testing of cost-effective protective coatings.

 

Reporting to the Plant Manager as part of the leadership team, we are looking for a Quality Supervisor that will be responsible for the quality management system and assuring quality in our products and manufacturing processes along with developing procedures, tests, and tools to measure, identify, and correct quality issues and minimize product variability.

 

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  1. Lead all functions of QA in technical and operational departments, from product development to incoming raw materials to finished products
  2. Lead projects regarding current product improvements, working closely with product development efforts
  3. Through use of porcelain enamel formulation and chemistry knowledge, provide product quality decisions and directions as well as define and direct prudent use of non-conforming materials
  4. 2 – 4  direct/indirect reports

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

  1. Analyze statistical data and product specifications to ensure standards that meet quality and reliability expectancy of finished products.
  2. Work closely with raw material vendors, customers, quality representatives, and company personnel to maximize product reliability and minimize costs.
  3. Manage non-conforming material process; using product, customer and materials knowledge direct material disposition.
  4. Manage ISO 9001 system.
  5. Assists operations achieving measurable and sustainable improvement in key metrics such as efficiency, productivity and effectiveness of business and manufacturing processes.
  6. Tracks APCOM Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and Key Improvement Priorities (KIP’s).   Assures root cause analysis and countermeasures have been taken to address deficiencies.
  7. Primary user of SAP with responsibility for all QA-related functions
  8. Maintain a high level of customer service by investigating and correcting issues and complaints relating to quality.
  9. Direct material testing and analyze material analytical testing for troubleshooting and certificate of analysis.
  10. Quality Assurance of all sample submissions of new/improved products and engineering changes.
  11. Prepare all necessary reports as required by customers and staff personnel.
  12. Design, develop, and implement quality control training programs for all quality control staff.
  13. Supervise QA Technicians to ensure high productivity and product integrity throughout the production cycle.
  14. Lead/participate in lean initiatives.
  15. Perform other activities as needed or as directed

 

BASIC QUALIFICIATIONS:

  1. Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or Chemistry preferably, Materials, Chemical or Ceramic Engineering, or  related discipline
  2. Minimum of 5 years of experience, preferable in a manufacturing environment
  3. Previous experience in leadership, training, and supervisory roles

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Trade Certification, such as Certified Quality Engineer, preferred
  2. Demonstrated ability of ceramic knowledge or material testing
  3. Demonstrated ability to evaluate and develop quality initiatives
  4. Demonstrated ability to lead a team of technicians
  5. Strong working knowledge and application of Quality processes, procedures, and tools (SPC, Six Sigma, Statistical Analysis)
