Primary Function

As a Product Engineer, you will be responsible for the design of new products, modifications to existing products and project management within A. O. Smith's fastest growing business unit, our North American Water Treatment division.  You will partner with manufacturing, sales, engineering and others to develop/deliver innovative water purification products.

This role is eligible for a remote work schedule of up to two days remote work per week. New employees are eligible to apply after successfully completing their initial 90 days of employment and training.

Role Specific Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage the implementation of new products and product enhancements
  • Identify development opportunities in new products, new process, quality enhancements, cost reduction, product line extensions and productivity
  • Ensure product changes and new technologies operate within all compliance requirements; design and conduct necessary testing
  • Communicate status of development activities to appropriate stakeholders
  • Support engineering functions for a product or a product family from design through production launch
  • Participate in planning objectives and in brainstorming activities for specific product enhancements
  • Manage multiple product development projects and ensure that cost, quality and schedule are established and maintained


  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • At least 3 years of experience designing plastic injection molded components
  • Experience managing new product development projects from design to successful production launch
  • Familiarity with patent/trade secret process
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proven ability to think out of the box in developing new products, analyzing data, and recommending technical solutions.
  • Proven ability to deliver on complex technical projects on time and within budget
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office and CAE tools such as SolidWorks or Autodesk
  • Water chemistry experience a plus
