Smith President’s Safety Award more times than any other plant in our organization, and has received an Excellence in Safety Award from the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce for the fourth consecutive year.  We are proud of our strong safety record and are looking for an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager to continue to take us to the next level at our McBee, South Carolina facility (approximately 500 employees) with additional oversight of our Charlotte, North Carolina facility (approximately 50 employees).

 

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager will implement, oversee, and adapt policies and programs to improve the organization's environmental and safety performance, ensure it complies with current and future regulations and standards, and protect its reputation. This position is responsible for providing leadership by developing strategies for effective environmental, health, safety and security programs for the facility.   This role will have direct reports to include the Plant Safety Supervisor and two Environmental Technicians for our Wastewater Treatment Plant, as well as oversight of external on-site Nurses and our Plant Security team.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing leadership by developing strategies for effective environmental, health, safety and security programs for the facility.
  • Will design, develop, implement and oversee the organization's environmental health and safety programs and procedures to safeguard employees and surrounding communities and to ensure that all facilities are in compliance with regulations.
  • Manage EHS activities to ensure the organization complies with EHS regulations as well as internal environmental policies. These activities may include: monitor EHS performance, identify risks or areas for improvement; conduct safety audits and on-site inspections to identify workplace hazards; investigate environmental incidents; prepare reports and recommendations; implement waste management programs; develop and deliver EHS training programs; manage relationships with community or environmental stakeholders.
  • Manage all federal, state, and local environmental programs (Air, SPCC, Storm Water, etc.) and permits and ensure compliance. Acts as company representative with government agencies in environmental, safety, and health matters affecting the company.
  • Responsible for influencing site leadership to improve EHS management and performance in their areas of responsibility. Responsible for driving continuous improvement of EHS performance.
  • Stay current with environmental regulations so the organization's EHS policies remain current and relevant.
  • Serves as the primary site contact for EHS-related government agencies (i.e. OSHA, EPA, DOT).
  • Manage plant waste water facility.
  • Direct supervision of all Safety, Environmental and security employees to include contract personnel. Lead, direct, evaluate, and develop this team.
  • Guide incident review process and perform incident trend analysis for hazard prevention and control.
  • Direct management of any workers’ compensation claims.
  • Identify safety improvement projects on the production floor and coordinate cross functional resources to complete projects and mitigate risks. Utilize the Safety Committee where feasible to complete projects and mitigate risks.
  • Establish facility EHS goals and metrics as well as maintain EHS metrics, record keeping, and communications
  • Manage EHS vendors, expenses, & budget
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in an Environmental Health and Safety field
  • Travel to our Charlotte, NC facility at least once a month
  • Minimum of 5 years related EHS experience in manufacturing
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory/leadership experience
  • Must have experience in OSHA regulations (14001, 45001, Silica preferred)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel required; proficiency in EHS Management Software a plus (ETQ)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required including strong presentation and influencing skills
