Smith’s Product Engineering and Manufacturing teams for our Commercial Water Heaters and Boilers, a category where we are the industry leader with over 50% market share.  This plant has 450+ employees in a 800,000+ sq ft building.  This location has earned the Lloyd B. Smith President’s Safety Award more times than any other plant in our organization and has received an Excellence in Safety Award from the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce for the fifth consecutive year.  We have multiple manufacturing processes (fabrication, furnace, paint, final assembly) and a multi-disciplinary Manufacturing Engineering team that supports them. 

Primary Function

Due to a promotion, we are looking for a Manufacturing Engineering Manager that will be responsible for overseeing the function within the facility  This includes a team of supervisors as direct reports and responsibility for capital projects and ensuring timely completion of projects, good utilization of resources, and fulfillment of project requirements. 

 

This role provides:

  • Responsibility for multiple facets of the plant (engineering, maintenance, wastewater, capital projects)
  • Growth opportunities to move into future Manufacturing Manager and/or Plant Manager roles within A. O. Smith
  • Opportunity to work with Toyota and our internal CI Manager on continuous improvement activities

Responsibilities

  • Impact short-term and long-term business goals
  • Define roles and responsibilities among team
  • Build relationships across departments
  • Conduct performance reviews with direct reports, provide timely feedback and coaching, and promote growth among team.   Develops and executives objectives for self and others
  • Directs use of CAE tools such as Solid works, MATLAB, LabView, Minitab, EES, CFD, FEA and interprets results
  • Develops and applies engineering standards and procedures, and provides advice on engineering issues
  • Effectively communicates technical material to internal business units
  • Maintain awareness of new and emerging technologies and applications
  • Provide timely feedback and coaching, and promote growth among team
  • Directs use of CAE tools such as Solidworks, MATLAB, LabView, Minitab, EES, CFD, FEA and interprets results
  • Develops and applies engineering standards and procedures, and provides advice on issues within the engineering field
  • Effectively communicates technical material to internal business units
  • Solid understanding of AOS processes and customers, participates in functional best practices, and has recognized expertise by operation.
  • Identifies projects of value to the company and establishes the technical requirements of each project
  • Establish objectives for timing, resources and funding requirement for projects
  • Manage one or projects with significant business impact with minimal guidance
  • Recommend, develop and implement projects to support department goals
  • Manage/oversee budget and timelines to ensure project goals are met
  • Identifies projects of significant value to the corporation.
  • Helps to guide AOS strategy. Provides communication on team’s progress to other areas within the organization

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • BS, MS, or PhD in engineering or related field  
  • Minimum of 7 years of related work experience 
  • Minimum of 5 years Supervisory/Leadership experience preferred

 

Additional Qualifications

  • Understands basic revenue models and future projections with the ability to shift resources appropriately
  •  Excellent analytical skills for reviewing costs and preparing budget reports. Manages the project, provides guidance and mentoring as needed
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
