The Corporate Technology Center (CTC) is the innovation nucleus of the organization. The CTC is charged with discovering, innovating, and developing the next big breakthroughs for A. O. Smith led by a talented and knowledgeable ensemble of MS and PhD research scientists and engineers, supported by a highly experienced team of technicians with backgrounds in hardware, software, mechanical and laboratory skills. Our brand-new research facility located in the north-west corner of Milwaukee, Wisconsin consists of state-of-the-art laboratories, collaborative workspaces, and a friendly environment to empower our team to push technology limits.
Primary Function
As a master-level technician working with electromechanical systems, you will be responsible for supporting A. O. Smith’s research and development activities by scoping requirements, designing and building electronic test setups for laboratory experiments, conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing test data, and troubleshooting systems and testing results.
Responsibilities
- Test Setup Design – work with senior research engineers to scope, develop and build custom test setups for lab experiments including but not limited to test hardware (e.g. National Instruments, Raspberry Pi, or custom PCBs), test software (e.g. embedded controls and LabView), wire harnessing, and data acquisition systems.
- Lab Experiments – independently or under the guidance of senior engineers, perform laboratory experiments supporting A. O. Smith water heating and treating research projects.
- Data Analysis – analyze experimental data to identify trends and collaborate with research team to draw meaningful conclusions from the test results.
- Debugging – troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during custom test equipment development and lab experimentation.
- Collaboration – work in a cross-functional team environment including a variety of lab technicians and experienced team of researchers to deliver research test equipment needs.
Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Engineering or Related Field with 7+ years of related work experience preferred. In lieu of degree will consider those with 10+ years of related work experience and High School Diploma or GED.
- Capable of building and maintaining complex control and data acquisition systems utilizing LabVIEW programming software.
- Experience with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators, multimeters and soldering stations.
- Experience working with electrical and mechanical systems used for testing in a research based organization.
- Can act with limited supervision on applying and trouble-shooting initial unit set up
- Can analyze problems, present solutions and implements decisions
- Easily recognizes when parameters are wrong, indicating that a unit is not functioning properly
- Understands what data needs to be collected, how that data is to be collected, and uses the proper forms for logging the required data. Understands what the data being recorded means to the performance of the unit under test
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
