Primary Function
The Materials Engineer (Corrosion) is a part of our Lloyd R. Smith Corporate Technology Center (CTC) Team in Milwaukee, WI. The CTC contains a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians with the purpose of researching and developing technologies on a 3-5 year time horizon. The Materials Engineer (Corrosion) will be responsible for researching corrosion and corrosion protection technologies for use in water heating equipment while supporting our global business units with failure analysis, test method development, and design guidance. If the Materials Engineer (Corrosion) has previous leadership experience, there is also an opportunity to supervisor the Materials Lab team including two lab techs, co-ops, and interns.
Responsibilities
- Work with internal and external testing labs to verify material and product performance using existing test methods and develop new test methods as needed. Organize and analyze test data into a meaningful format to drive material-related decision making.
- Complete failure analysis and technical reviews of materials related product complaints and work with the manufacturing plants and business unit teams to resolve these issues.
- Identify and evaluate new technologies that improve A. O. Smith product corrosion resistance.
- Work with our manufacturing teams to trial new materials and new processes related to corrosion protection and improved corrosion resistance.
- Be the subject matter expert on corrosion and corrosion protection for A. O. Smith by understanding the state-of-the-art and educating the organization.
- Assist in troubleshooting materials-related challenges to quality, performance, and productivity.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Engineering plus 3 years of experience, or PhD. Materials or Chemical Engineering Degree preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise and accomplishments in corrosion chemistry and corrosion protection.
- Experience with material characterization and analysis methods (mechanical testing, thermal analysis, rheology, spectroscopy) and the underlying theory.
- Experience with failure analysis, chemical compatibility, and corrosion studies.
- Great communication and organizational skills, including the ability to facilitate and foster good cross-functional, multi-disciplinary teamwork.
- Strong time management and prioritization skills in order to balance multiple projects within a defined schedule and budget.
