Primary Function
Designs, arranges, and builds experimental subassemblies and prototype models requiring a high degree of accuracy. Analyzes engineering specifications, sketches, and drawings and applies information to construct special tools or fittings to build models. Acts as a mentor within the group who will train less experienced prototype technicians and will also collaborate with engineers throughout the design process.
Role Specific Responsibilities
- Use independent thinking in order to collaborate with engineers on prototype and fabrication decisions
- Lead engineers through the prototype design process and offers alternative design approaches
- Provide technical support to local site and operating units as necessary to maintain excellent communication with all outside personnel involved.
- Design and fabricate new products and processes in order to improve and maintain existing products.
- May conduct design analysis on components and/or assemblies to assist in the development process by ensuring designs are cost efficient, manufactural, and reliable.
- Assist designer and engineers in development work, including skilled fitting, timing adjustment, fabrication and construction of tools.
- Coordinate and prioritize tasks within the department.
- Produce complex designs using CAD tools and fabricate the protoypes in the lab.
- Prepare detailed drawings of products from sketches using software tools, ensuring that drawings incorporate all design features and maintain the product style.
- Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Qualifications
- Fabrication, welding and machining skills
- Ability to use computer software including MS Office, CAD, and SolidWorks
- Ability to read blueprints and work from sketches
- Ability to coordinate and prioritize project tasks
- Effective written & verbal communication
