Primary Function
The Manufacturing Engineering Manager is a technical and managerial position responsible for working with A.O. Smith facilities in a collaborative manner, providing coordination of global manufacturing and process engineers to achieve long term goals & objectives of the Global Manufacturing & Process Engineering Team.
Role Specific Responsibilities
- Work with Global Director of Manufacturing & Process Engineering to develop and refine the long-term strategy and short-term goals for manufacturing and process engineering
- Champion the advancement of 4M process standardization initiatives associated with various manufacturing and management processes
- Facilitate multi-site, cross-functional collaborative efforts and consensus decision making
- Establish relationships and understanding of manufacturing process capabilities and facility footprint challenges, and help optimize material process flows, facility layouts, and footprint utilization
- Facilitate capacity & labor productivity and process efficiency improvement initiatives
- Coordinate Value Stream Mapping (VSM) of existing manufacturing processes including identification of process related bottlenecks and capacity limitations
- Provide governance and process ownership for facility risk management, process safety standards and environmental, social & governance (ESG) compliance programs
- Create plans for future growth opportunities (up to and including expansions and new green field opportunities) in a global organization
- Provide advisory review and guidance on suggested process changes (by site) and capital projects affective equipment layout and workspace utilization
- Investigate technologies for alignment and ensure automation strategies are developed and implemented to help advance manufacturing process capabilities
- Provide support for special projects and value realization initiatives
- Perform other activities as dictated by business needs
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related field (manufacturing engineering & industrial technology or industrial engineering preferred)
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, with broad understanding of manufacturing & assembly processes and related work environments
- Highly motivated, self-starter who can prioritize based on overall goals & objectives
- Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated leadership experience
- Good project management skills with proven ability to lead and/or influence without authority in meeting defined goals, objectives & deadlines
- Experience with lean manufacturing processes and continuous improvement tools (value stream mapping, time studies, line balancing, capacity & labor productivity studies, data analysis)
- ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to work independently and able to plan, develop, and execute tactical and strategic manufacturing initiatives, and must carry out duties with utmost integrity
- Demonstrated problem solving experience using root cause analysis with a focus on continuous improvement
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Must be able to travel (up to 50% as business needs require)
- Experience with the following manufacturing processes: Polyurethane Foaming, Enamel & Organic Coating, Metal Processing, Plastic Processing, Welding, Heat Pump (A PLUS)
- Proficiency with computers and programs, specifically Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
